Savour local food this weekend

History buffs and foodies unite! The first-ever Heritage Culinary Tour hits Durham Region this weekend.

The tour is the brain child of Kerri King, manager of tourism for Durham Region and brings together four of the most beautiful historic sites in the area, including downtown Oshawa’s Parkwood National Historic Site.

One passport allows guests to savour their way through four buildings, including Parkwood, the Garden of Eden in Whitby, Ajax’s Heritage House and the Pickering Museum Village.

Each site will feature its own unique appetizers prepared by Heritage House Catering chef Cathy Brown. The full menu is available online. Passports cost $49 per person and $79 per couple, accessible online.

Eugene Dupuis, co-owner of the Heritage House in Pickering Village along with Brown, says the perks for guests are obvious. “Seeing fabulous century homes and gardens that they wouldn’t normally get to see,” he says. “Plus enjoy amazing gourmet appetizers while they are seeing them.”

Heritage House in Ajax is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Dupuis believes Parkwood is a huge draw for Oshawa residents. “Parkwood is a National Historic Site and one of the gems of Canadian architecture and gardens!”

As for the food selection, Dupuis says Heritage House Catering’s focus is to use local, seasonal ingredients since it is harvest time. “Many of our appetizers contain fresh ingredients sourced from local farms.”

The Heritage Culinary Tour also kicks off another food lover’s event, Savour the Season. The 10-day program features 29 of Durham’s best casual and fine dining restaurants and over 35 local growers and producers.

“This is a great example of a collaborative effort that helps showcase Durham as a unique tourist destination,” says Brown.

In downtown Oshawa, Fazio’s Restaurant is the only central stop for hungry eaters. Their $20 lunch menu and $35 dinner menu feature a choice of three appetizers, entrée’s and desserts to mix-and-match your way through a fine dining meal. Highlight selections from their choices include Fazio’s signature Caesar salad, an Italian frittata with local asparagus, tomatoes and herbs served alongside a local spinach and bacon salad and for something sweet a local poached pear in a cabernet wine cinnamon sauce. Fazio’s has been matched with Clark Meats, Pingle’s Farm Market, Asheton Maple Products, White Feather Country Store and Linton’s Farm Market for supplies.

Full details can be found on the Savour the Season website and the Fazio’s event menus are also available online.

Both events feature fabulous food from local suppliers. Attendees are sure to savour this opportunity for great food and great sights.
